Dear New 'Canes:

Welcome to the University of Miami! We are absolutely delighted you have chosen UM and want to wish you well as you embark on a transformative time in your life!

You are joining the University of Miami community at a very exciting time in its history and in the history of our nation. You will have the opportunity to take part in many interesting events this academic and election year.

Your class is the finest we have ever recruited. And those of you who are transferring into the University this year are just as strong! You come from all over this country and the world.

You have distinguished yourselves academically, and you are leaders in your schools and communities.

You have countless interests and talents: artistic, academic, musical, athletic, service related, theatrical, and environmental, to name just a few.

You will find that the best way to have a productive, rich, and rewarding time here is to study hard and to get involved. We encourage you to find your place here by taking advantage of the many academic, co-curricular, service-learning, and social opportunities on campus and in our community.

I look forward to meeting you during Orientation 2008, and wish each of you a wonderful summer. Congratulations!

Best wishes,

Donna E. Shalala
